Come out for a fun-filled day at Children’s Career Day! Kids can dress up as government workers and participate in hands-on activities that explore different careers. The event also features the “A Good Government Job” exhibit, showcasing the history and impact of Black civil servants in our community. It’s a fun and educational way to celebrate Black history while inspiring the next generation of leaders!

Director Robert O’Hara oversees a potent new staging that imagines Malcolm as an Everyman whose story transcends time and space. An exceptional cast of breakout artists and young Met stars enliven the operatic retelling of the civil rights leader’s life. “Not just a thought-provoking show, it is also highly entertaining.” -MSNBC. Run Time: 3h 20m (3 acts with two 15-minute intermissions). Recommended for ages 18 & up; contains strong language. Dr. James Illingworth has been on the staff of the University of Mayland’s History Department Freedmen and Southern Society Project since 2015 and is currently an associate editor. He received his PhD in history from the University of California, Santa Cruz; his research and writing focuses on slavery, emancipation, and Reconstruction. Illingworth is the lead editor for a forthcoming volume of Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation that examines family and kinship among formerly enslaved people in the immediate aftermath of emancipation.

Classical and jazz pianist and singer Hazel Scott (1920–1981) was the first person of African descent to host their own network TV show in America (The Hazel Scott Show). The Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) explores Scott’s life, legacy, and music. Journey with curator Professor Nevilla Ottley as you hear songs played and loved by Scott, with narration exploring and highlighting the life of the musician, who was also an outspoken critic of racial discrimination and segregation.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Dr. Julie Rose, director of Marietta House Museum, will share the latest research about the women, free and enslaved, who lived and labored at Marietta between 1783 and 1865. How did their lives intersect at Marietta, a former tobacco plantation in Prince George’s County? The talk features three generations of enslaved women from the Jackson, Butler, and Duckett families and the enslaving mistress Jane Duvall.

The talk for the afternoon tea will be an enjoyable look at Jane Austen’s life through Austen’s famous literature. Brush up on your favorite JA books and movies, as there will be trivia and prizes.
