Dr. James Illingworth has been on the staff of the University of Mayland’s History Department Freedmen and Southern Society Project since 2015 and is currently an associate editor. He received his PhD in history from the University of California, Santa Cruz; his research and writing focuses on slavery, emancipation, and Reconstruction. Illingworth is the lead editor for a forthcoming volume of Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation that examines family and kinship among formerly enslaved people in the immediate aftermath of emancipation.

The Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) explores Scott’s life, legacy, and music. Journey with curator Professor Nevilla Ottley as you hear songs played and loved by Scott, with narration exploring and highlighting the life of the musician, who was also an outspoken critic of racial discrimination and segregation.

Ms. Dukes Edinberg is an expert in American art and decorative arts and serves as the curator at Hammond Harwood House in Annapolis, MD. Free program. Walk-ins welcome. Guests may bring a bag lunch.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Dr. Julie Rose, director of Marietta House Museum, will share the latest research about the women, free and enslaved, who lived and labored at Marietta between 1783 and 1865. How did their lives intersect at Marietta, a former tobacco plantation in Prince George’s County? The talk features three generations of enslaved women from the Jackson, Butler, and Duckett families and the enslaving mistress Jane Duvall.

Mark Historic Preservation Month at Marietta House Museum. M-NCPPC Planning Department’s Daniel Tana will provide important information about how to apply for historic-preservation tax credits. Often homeowners of historic houses do preservation work on their homes but may not be fully aware of the tax credits and financial help that may be available.
