The Paradox of the Declaration of Independence

In 1776 Thomas Jefferson wrote the famous first lines of the Declaration of Independence. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
But for America’s enslaved Black population it took 87 years and a bloody civil war before they began to gain these “unalienable Rights”. It wasn’t until 1965 the rights to liberty for Black Americans were protected by the U.S. Constitution.
