Extreme Heat Advisory in Washington Metropolitan Area: M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County Encourages Caution and Offers Cooling Relief Options

Riverdale, MD – Due to the extreme heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County encourages all patrons to use caution when participating in outdoor activities today across the Washington Metropolitan Area.

Cooling Relief Available

All M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation sites, including community centers and indoor facilities, may be used as quick-stop cooling centers to help individuals beat the heat, cool off, use the restroom, or grab a break from the outdoors. These locations are not full-service cooling centers, but they can offer short-term relief.

For extended cooling relief, please refer to the designated cooling centers across Prince George’s County offered by M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, listed below, which are open only during their regular hours of operation. Please confirm the hours prior to visiting.

Residents and visitors are strongly encouraged to limit time outdoors and consider postponing visits to the following locations during the hottest parts of the day:

· Parks

· Trails

· Outdoor tennis, pickleball, basketball courts

· Playgrounds

· Golf courses

· Picnic pavilions

· Campgrounds

· Playgrounds

· Trap & skeet

· Old Maryland farm

· Any other outdoor Parks and Rec facility

Please note: Program services and outdoor activities may be adjusted, canceled, or postponed when temperatures reach 100 degrees or more. These decisions are made in the best interest of public safety and community well-being.

All indoor and outdoor pools will remain open and operate under regular scheduled hours. Advanced reservations are encouraged to ensure patrons can access the pools. Additional Resources and Safety Tips:

· Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

· Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours, typically from 10 am to 4 pm.

· Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect the heat and sunlight.

· Use sunscreen with high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
