As part of the Central Avenue Connector Trail (CACT) Program, CACT Segment 1 will be the first segment in the program to go through the full design process in anticipation of construction.
Segment 1 of the CACT begins at the intersection of Central Avenue and Old Central Avenue along the south side of Central Avenue, turning off the road into PEPCO property at Daimler Drive, then continuing to Shady Glen Drive. At Shady Glen Drive, the trail will provide a mid-block crossing and continue along the east side of Shady Glen Drive as a two-way cycle track and existing sidewalk. Segment 1 will end at the intersection with Central Avenue (MD-214).
In 2016, a 30% design report and preliminary plans for Phase 1 were developed. The original alignment included in this report spanned from Old Central Avenue to Peppermill Drive.
In 2024, design efforts began to take the original 30% design plans completed in 2016 to 100% construction plans.
This project is also coordinating efforts with the SHA MD214 PSAP project. In addition to SHA, coordination with WMATA, PEPCO, and select adjacent property owners is required to bring this trail project to life.
