Nottingham School circa 1911-1947
17412 Nottingham Road
Upper Marlboro, Maryland 20772
301-627-6074; TTY 301-669-2544

Nottingham School is one of only a few surviving one-room schoolhouses left in Prince George's County. The school opened circa 1911 and was built for $744.50. Materials from an earlier school located on the site were also used in the new construction.

In 1920, the Board of Education reported that the 24' by 32' building had a capacity for 40 students in grades one through eight. The furniture consisted of only 20 student desks, two bookcases, a slate blackboard, a stove, and a teacher's desk. Located approximately 300 yards from the building were the school's only sanitary amenities - a well and bucket and two toilets.

Nottingham School was closed in 1947, when the consolidation of County schools made the one-room schoolhouse obsolete.
