PILOT YOUTH PROGRAM TO IMPACT FITNESS AND NUTRITION BEHAVIOR
A coordinated approach to children's health by integrating a nutrition and physical fitness component in various kids' care and after-school programs is now being offered by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission's Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince Georges County.
Aimed at improving behavior towards physical activity and increasing the awareness of the importance of eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains, the CATCH KIDS Club Nutrition and Fitness Curriculum is being piloted at eight M-NCPPC community centers now and will continue throughout the summer by expanding the curriculum into selected summer camp programs.
Participants will learn that healthy bodies are the result of physical activities and good eating habits. Our goals are to increase knowledge of how to prepare healthy foods, how fruits and vegetables are grown, how to use a pedometer, monitor progress in a daily journal, and why changing old eating and physical\fitness habits are important.
The program also incorporates the expertise of registered dietitians through The Maryland Chapter of the American Dietetic Association, and fitness professionals. In addition, the initiative will enable kids to participate in the President's Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Program. This award recognizes participants who engage in physical activity for at least one hour, five days a week for six weeks consecutively.
