USFS TransitionFrequently Asked Questions1. What is U.S. Figure Skating? U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) is the national governing body for the sport of figure skating in the United States. USFS is a member of the International Skating Union, the International Federation for Figure Skating, and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. USFS is composed of member clubs, collegiate clubs, school-affiliated clubs, individual members, Friends of Figure Skating, and Basic Skills programs. USFS is one of the strongest and largest governing bodies within the winter Olympic movement and boasts more than 170,000 members in over 700 member clubs, collegiate clubs, and schools affiliated clubs, and more than 900 registered Basic Skills Programs. 2. What are the benefits of USFS? USFS is the leading Learn to Skate program in the United States serving the needs of both recreational and competitive skaters. Further, the Basic Skills Learn to Skate program was developed by USFS to provide a fun, safe atmosphere for all students to learn how to ice skate. The program offers a bridge to the organization’s testing and competitive structure, and is designed to be fun, challenging, and rewarding. 3. Why are we transitioning? Tucker Road Ice Rink is proud to join hands with USFS and transition over to their official Basic Skills Learn to Skate program. Each skater enrolled in classes at the rink will automatically become a member of USFS, an affiliation linking you to professional programs as well as many other USFS athletes. We are adopting this new Learn to Skate curriculum as it is a much more comprehensive program than the Ice Skating Institute (ISI) classes that were previously offered at Tucker Road Ice Rink. It is our belief that USFS provides a better foundation for skaters of all levels. Participation in the program will enable skaters of all ages and abilities to learn the fundamentals of the sport, and pursue a lifetime commitment to health and wellness. 4. How can I get more information about Tucker Road’s implementation of the USFS curriculum? Every effort will be taken to ease the transition for our Learn to Skate patrons. In Tucker Road’s lobby there will be an information table complete with brochures and materials regarding the implementation of this program and the many facets of USFS. Further, all of our staff will be able to answer any questions you may have, and our skating director, Natalie Paul, will be making rounds to classes for the first couple weeks to offer additional information and redirect any students that may be in the wrong skill level. We will also host a parents meeting on the first day of classes, and provide supplemental instruction on the ice to facilitate this transition. 5.
