Home-School Science Clubs

Watkins Nature Center offers Home-School Science Clubs for ages 5-14. These clubs meet once a month during September-December and February-May. On the scheduled class dates, participants explore various nature topics through hikes, hands-on activities, and presentations. Registration is available only through SMARTlink, and usually begins one month prior to the first date of class. For information on how to set up a SMARTlink account please call Watkins Nature Center at 301-218-6702.

Spring 2014 Home School Science Clubs

Nature Friends (Ages 5-6), Thursdays, 10-11:30 am

  • February 13 – Mammals and Me
  • March 13 – Mastering Magnets  
  • April 10 – Exploring Trees
  • May 8 – Wonderful Wetlands

Fee: Resident $14; Non-Resident $17 (covers all 4 dates)

Nature Rangers (Ages 7-9), Thursdays, 1-3 pm

  • February 13 – Introduction to Science Fair Projects
  • March 13 – Birding for Beginners (Bring binoculars if you have them)  
  • April 17 – Stream Analysis (wear shoes that can get wet)
  • May 15 –  Science Fair Presentations for Judges

Fee: Resident $20; Non-Resident $24 (covers all 4 dates)

Spring 2014 Home School Hikers  (Ages 8-12)
Thursday, February 27 1-3:30 pm
Join a naturalist on a hike for fitness and fun. Start out with stretches and then hike through the park, learn about nature and animals.  We Will focus on a different them for each hike.  Please bring a water bottle, binoculars, and dress appropriately for the weather.
Fee: Resident $4; Non-Resident $5
