*The Old Maryland Farm will be closed Monday, May 27 (Memorial Day). The Old Maryland Farm will be open Thursday, July 4 (Independence Day) from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm.*

Located just a short walking distance from the miniature train station in Watkins Regional Park, Old Maryland Farm is an educational farm facility open to the public. Its agricultural exhibits, livestock, and display gardens provide a farming experience to visitors. Interpretive programs for students visiting the farm are correlated to the Maryland State Curriculum for grades K-12. The facility offers interested visitors of all ages a variety of volunteer opportunities related to animal care, greenhouse and garden maintenance, and visitor services.

Old Maryland Farm offers opportunities for birthday parties, hay rides, and farm demonstrations.

farm animal care programs

Tuesdays at 2 pm, June 11 - August 13,

See the farmer's routine care of the animals. Will include demonstrations and discussions on such topics as hoof trimming, hair/coat management, training, and preventative treatments. Appropriate for all ages. Program will last approximately 30 -45 minutes. Reservations are required. Please call 301-218-6770.

June 13 - Gardening (SMARTLINK # 1153565)   

Learn how to get seeds started and maintain plants. Come and dissect and plant a seed, learn about the different parts of a seed and some basics on what seeds need in order to sprout, continue to grow, and thrive.

June 20 - Garden bugs - the good & bad (SMARTLINK # 1153566)   

Learn how plants and bugs affect each other. Learn how to identify insects, mites, spiders, and other creeppy crawlers in your garden. Learn how to differentiate beneficial bugs, such as pollinators and helpful predators from the bugs that will harm your garden.

June 27 - horse and pony (SMARTLINK # 1153567)   

What is a pony? What is a horse? Learn basic care and requirements, discover their special physical features, and the history and uses of horses and ponies. See an animal care demonstration.

July 11 - sheep & llama (SMARTLINK # 1153568)   

Learn about the physical features, origins, basic care and requirements of sheep and llamas, and the products they produce. Learn how wool and hair are harvested to make fibers for clothing.

July 18 - dairy cows (SMARTLINK # 1153569)   

Learn about basic care and physical features of dairy cows, and the products they produce. See some of the products they produce and watch an animal care demonstration, and enjoy hands-on activities.

July 25 - discover plant products (SMARTLINK # 1153570)   

Join us for an exploration of plants and their many products. Dsicover the products you use daily that come from plants. Plant products can range from plastic utensils and crayons, to cosmetics and toothpaste.

August 1 - backyard birds (SMARTLINK # 1153571)   

Considering raising chickens or other barnyard fowl at home, or just curious about these fanciful fowl? Learn about the physical features and proper care of chickens and other barnyard fowl, and discuss different considerations.

august 8 - bees & butterflies (SMARTLINK # 1153572)   

Discover the physical features, behaviors, and habitat of bees and butterflies. Explore pollination and pollinators, and learn how pollinators help produce food in gardens.

Location/Directions

From the Capital Beltway (I-495), take Exit 15A, Central Avenue (Route 214) East. At third stoplight, turn right onto Watkins Park Drive (Route 193) South. Proceed 1 mile and turn right into Watkins Regional Park. After turning into Watkins Regional Park at the marquee sign, go straight at stop sign, turn right; go 100 feet and take a left. At next stop sign, turn left into the playground parking lot. Walk the paved path next to the train and carousel that leads to the farm.

From Route 301, take exit for Route 214 (Central Avenue) West. At third stoplight turn left onto Watkins Park Drive (Route 193) South. Go 1 mile, turn right onto Watkins Park Drive at the marquee sign. Go straight, at stop sign, turn left into the playground parking lot.
