Treat yourself and someone special to an English tea in the relaxing atmosphere of the elegant South Wing. Indulge in a prix fixe menu of fine finger sandwiches, scrumptious cakes and pastries, buttery scones and your choice of two quality loose leaf teas. Bones and fossils from Prince George's County's pre-historic past! See the remains of dinosaurs, plants and early mammals from Dinosaur Park, Laurel's own, rare 100 million year old deposit of fossils. These fossils were first discovered in 1858 on Snowden property! $3/adults, $2/seniors, $1/children ages 6 through 18

St. patrick's day tea, with music by sine nomine

Celebrate the luck of the Irish with an elegant tea in Montpelier's South Wing. Music by Sine Nomine, a recorder ensemble playing music from the Renaissance and Baroque eras.

Hands-on history day: be a wood turner's apprentice, with the chesapeake woodturners!
saturday, march 24 and sunday, march 25, 1-4 pm
Saturday, visitors can see how chairs were made by hand - and foot! - on a foot-powered treadle lathe, then they can sand the spindles, weave the seats, and more. At the end, they can sign their own "apprentice contract" with a quill pen! On Sunday, watch pens being turned on an electric lathe, then assemble the pens to take home. Also watch as wooden tops are made, and take one home.

Wednesday, March 21, 7:30 pm - Scott Shields, historian with the National Park Service at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore, will speak on the Chesapeake campaigns of the War of 1812.
Wednesday, April 18, 7:30 pm - Historian Glenn Williams compares and contrasts the national defense policies of the presidents Washington, Adams and Madison.
Wednesday, May 16, 7:30 pm - Wayne Smith, Civil War re-enactor, author, history teacher, and long-time Montpelier docent, will share his finding on the three children and ten grandchildren of Nicholas and Elizabeth Snowden, who have documented Civil War service.

Montpelier Festival of Herbs, Tea and the Arts Saturday, april 28, 10 am-4 pm
Stroll among vendors of fragrant herbs, fine arts, handmade items like baskets, garden accessories, jewelry, and much more. Hear live music. Enjoy tea and scones in the mansion. Visit artists in their studios and see a variety of art exhibits. Take a tour of Montpelier. Enjoy a tasty lunch, take in a lecture. Kids can play colonial games, do art projects, see a live animal exhibit, and more. This year’s theme is “teas of the world,” so there are lots of international treats in store.

What’s in Your Closet? Textile Preservation Workshop
Saturday, May 19, 9 am-12 noon
Learn how to preserve your family’s textiles such as wedding dresses, christening dresses, hats, quilts and other types of family heirlooms. Led by Montpelier Mansion’s Collections Manager, Karen Whitehair, this workshop will introduce you to some of the techniques used by conservators to care for and store textile materials. It will consist of an overview of environmental agents that attack textile materials, basic techniques anyone can use to slow them down, a tour of re-housed materials found in the site’s collections storage area, and a direct hands-on experience to learn how to do the same thing at home. Reservation and advance payment required. Limit 20 people.
