Café Groove Offers Up a Night of Substantive Soul with Teisha Marie
Hyattsville, MD – Café Groove offers up A Night of Substantive Soul with Teisha Marie on Friday, November 6, 2009 from 7-10 pm at Prince George’s Plaza Community Center, located at 6600 Adelphi Road, Hyattsville, MD 20782.
Inviting, intriguing and delicious are just some of the many adjectives that describe the sound of Teisha Marie. So, what about her style? It's inviting; it's Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin meets Nancy Wilson and Debussy. This England-born/Maryland-raised singer-songwriter is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, and poet. She's also one who's not afraid to take risks. After graduating from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA, where she studied music history and theory, Teisha Marie then headed to Philadelphia. "At that particular time, Philadelphia was experiencing a rebirth of the 'Philly sound', and it was great to be fully immersed in it. I got a chance to meet the greats, like Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, Bunny Sigler, and many others."
Performing at D.C. area hot spots, such as Bohemian Caverns and Artomatic, Marie has also performed around the east coast in Atlanta, Harrisburg, and New York which proved to be both enlightening and exhilarating. Teisha says, "Performing for me is a way to connect with people and create an intimate experience. Music is a passion for me and I love to share my excitement every chance I get."
In keeping with Café Groove tradition, there will be an open mic and visual arts contest with cash prizes. Tickets are $3, including refreshments and are available at the door. Doors open at 7 pm, and the performance begins at 7:30 pm.

M-NCPPC Earns National Parks and Recreation Re-accreditation
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) has again earned national accreditation for its innovative parks and recreation programs and strong management. On October 13, 2009, the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) announced that M-NCPPC is one of only 88 park and recreation agencies in the U.S. to reach this standard. The distinguished accomplishment was announced in Salt Lake City, UT at the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) 2009 Congress and Exposition.
M-NCPPC operates local parks and recreation programs in Prince George’s County, and the park system in Montgomery County. In addition, the bi-county agency manages planning functions for both counties.
The process of reaccreditation is extensive and took several years to accomplish. After completing the application process, the agency developed a detailed self-assessment report followed by a visit to M-NCPPC’s facilities by a team of experienced park and recreation professionals. Finally, a review was conducted by CAPRA before reaccreditation was formally conferred.
“We are very proud of achieving national accreditation once again for our parks and recreation department’s innovative programs and strong management,” said Samuel J. Parker, Jr., M-NCPPC chairman. “M-NCPPC has made great strides over the years to provide enriching programs and services for residents of all ages and we look forward to achieving even greater heights in the years to come.”
Ronnie Gathers, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, said, “This is a great achievement, and one that shows that along with our community partners, M-NCPPC is providing a high caliber parks and recreation system for our residents.”
M-NCPPC was first accredited in 2004. Every five years, an accredited agency must be thoroughly reviewed to ensure continued compliance with the national accreditation standards. These standards represent all areas of operation for parks and recreation departments. National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies respond to 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient operations. To become accredited, agencies must fully meet 36 standards deemed fundamental to a quality agency and at least 102 of the remaining standards.
The Commission is comprised of representatives from the National Recreation and Park Association, the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials, the International City/County Managers Association, American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation, the Armed Forces Recreation Society, and the Council of State Executive Directors.
