Statement on the Status of Tucker Road Ice Rink
Riverdale, MD - The Tucker Road Ice Rink, an indoor rink in Ft. Washington owned and operated by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission's Department of Parks and Recreation, is closed due to a significant, 2-alarm fire that took place on Wednesday, January 4. Staff and customers got out of the building safely, with no injuries reported. All programs, classes and other activities at the facility are canceled due to the fire. However, we are allowing the use of existing Tucker Road Ice Rink passes at M-NCPPC's Wells Ice Rink in College Park during this skating season.
The Department of Parks and Recreation is working with contractors on cleaning and fire restoration efforts. Following evaluation of damages by insurance adjustors and structural engineers, plans will be made for repairs and rebuilding. Part of this assessment will include developing a timeline; no reopening date can be announced now. The expectation is that it will take significant dollars and time before the facility can reopen.
The Department is committed to communicating with local residents and ice rink customers to provide updates during this process.
The Department of Parks and Recreation provides comprehensive park and recreation programs, facilities and services which respond to changing needs within our communities. The Department strives to preserve, enhance and protect our open spaces to enrich the quality of life for present and future generations in a safe and secure environment.
