The Prince Georges County Planning Department of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) has begun a study of the Greater Chillum community, which includes the neighborhoods of Avondale, Carole Highlands, Hampshire Knolls, and Lewisdale. The project will concentrate on developing a comprehensive list of needs and improvement strategies with an emphasis on defining and facilitating neighborhood conservation, pedestrian safety and access, and commercial revitalization strategies and programs.

The project has a variety of goals with a primary focus on public outreach and engagement, economic development, housing, pedestrian safety, and appropriate land uses. The project team shall meet the following objectives:
  • Build upon existing relationships, and develop new relationships with the community to gather information and garner support for the plan.
  • Determine if land use changes are needed to implement plan recommendations.
  • Develop recommendations for improving pedestrian safety and access within the existing transportation network.
  • Develop recommendations to enhance community character and distinguish the area as a distinctive place within the County.
  • Outline approaches to support and improve existing housing, identify opportunities for new residential development, and address issues of foreclosure.
  • Prepare economic development strategies to improve and promote new businesses and real estate development in the area.
  • Provide graphic illustrations of key recommendations that meet plan objectives.
