Maureen will share some of her own experiences as a practitioner working in campus events, community and therapeutic recreation, and outdoor adventure. In addition, she will share how the outcome of particular court cases has changed our attitudes, standards, and laws. “Suggestions” for Better Fire Code Compliance

This workshop will begin with the introduction and explanation of the Fire Code adoption and enforcement process in the State of Maryland. This explanation will direct facility designers and operators to the appropriate sources for information, interpretations, and implementations of various fire and life safety code initiatives. Further, this session will include an overview of the basic requirements for occupancy classifications of interest to the park and recreation community, including places of assembly, day care centers, and recreational residential structures. Included will be an introduction to the Crowd Manager Certification Program currently available through the web site of the State Fire Marshal’s Office.


Workplace Hazard Assessment

This introductory workshop guides participants through the job hazard analysis process, including a discussion of prioritizing hazards, breaking hazardous jobs into individual steps, and uncovering the unique hazards in each step. Topics to be covered include:

  • Prioritizing hazards using a decision-making matrix
  • Performing a job hazard analysis
  • Developing procedures to reduce or eliminate identified hazards

Preparing for a Medical Emergemcy at Parks and Recreation Facilities and the Use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED)
